What are Modelling Digitals or Polaroids

I have had the pleasure of working with models at various stages of their careers, from those just starting out to established professionals. I work with them on campaigns and editorials, as well as help create or enhance their model portfolios. One of the essential tools for all models is what are commonly known as modeling digitals. These images, formerly referred to as "polaroids," provide a straightforward and unembellished representation of a model's appearance. But what are they, why are they so crucial, and how can you ensure that your digitals stand out to casting?

What Are Modeling Digitals?

Modelling digitals are a series of photographs made to showcase the model without any makeup, heavy styling, or editing. They typically consist of around 10 images ranging from full body to close-ups to give casting directors a clear idea of the model from every angle. These images are usually photographed in even, natural light against a white backdrop, allowing casting directors to see the model as a blank canvas. The goal is to provide a clear view of how the model presents themselves most genuinely, free from distractions that styling and makeup can create.

The Value of Professional Photography

While taking these photos with your smartphone isn't unheard of, investing in a professional photographer can make a significant difference. Professional photographers understand lighting, angles, and what casting directors look for, ensuring you present your best self. A set of high-quality digitals can help you stand out in a competitive field and enhance your chances of landing a callback.

Photograph with Intention

Like all photographs, these should be carefully planned. You don’t need to worry about your hair or makeup, and the wardrobe is very standard, but you should have a clear understanding of the modeling market you want your digitals to target. Runway casting looks for different qualities than commercial agents, so communicate your goals clearly to your photographer.

Keeping Your Digitals Updated

Modelling digitals aren't a one-time effort; they should be updated regularly to reflect your current look. Significant changes such as new tattoos, haircuts, weight fluctuations, or new glasses necessitate a refresh. For models under 18, it's recommended that these images be updated quarterly. Maintaining an updated portfolio is crucial for showcasing your evolving style and appearance, ensuring that you send an accurate representation and get cast for the right job.

Modelling digitals are more than just photographs; they are necessary in all modelling careers, and good digitals showcase the model's natural beauty and potential. By investing in quality images and staying current with your portfolio, you'll be better equipped to get the attention of casting directors and take your modelling to the next level.
